SANKARA The eternal watchman

Project diary

A monument in the making

From the request for a work to its installation in a park in Rome. This page follows the stages as they come, and will stay open after the unveiling.

  1. Saturday 24 October 2026

Unveiling at the Parco Thomas Sankara

The monument will be unveiled at the Parco Thomas Sankara, Via Ugo della Seta, in the III Municipio of Rome, on Saturday 24 October 2026.

The time and the order of the day will be given here as soon as they are settled. The photographic campaign will follow, and will open the virtual tour.

  2. To come

    Transport and installation

The stepped reinforced concrete base is cast on site, in the park. The steel prism is then set on it and sealed.

  3. 2026 — Bologna

    The making, finished

The plates were laser cut and the bosses pressed by specialist workshops, from the files sent from Ouagadougou. The assembly, the welding and the finishing were done by the artist himself. The steel has taken its first oxidation: the monument is ready to leave for Rome.

The name ISIDORE NOEL THOMAS SANKARA 1949-1987 and the author's signature are cut into the steel on the same principle as the portrait.

  4. 17 September 2025 — Rome

    The park receives its name

The III Municipio of Rome names the green space on Via Ugo della Seta, in the Montesacro district: Parco Thomas Sankara. The commemorative plaque is unveiled in the presence of the Ambassador of Burkina Faso to Italy and of representatives of the City of Rome.

  5. Ouagadougou

    The design

The work was conceived in full at the Studio Hamed Ouattara, from the sculptural decision through to the cutting files: the choice of a hollow prism rather than a statue, the portrait in negative space, the skin of bosses, and the count of the elements settled after research into the chronology of the Democratic and Popular Revolution.

  6. At the beginning

    A request, and a park

Comrade Madi Sakandé, of the Burkinabè diaspora in Italy, gives a work to the benefit of the Burkinabè State for the Parco Thomas Sankara in Rome. He asks Hamed Ouattara for a work, and not a statue.
